From its inception in 2004 with its first 300 swimmers, the State King of the Bays event celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013 with 1600 participants – demonstrating a huge amount of loyalty and interest in the event across all swimming abilities. Its popularity is also no surprise given the stunning scenery and atmosphere created around the event in the lifestyle-focused communities of Takapuna and Milford. The event is final of six events in the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.
Consisting of four different swim events, the State King of the Bays provides an ocean swim event for all ages and abilities:
‘I’m Going Long’ – a 2.8km swim along the coast from Milford Beach to Takapuna Beach.
‘Step It Up’ – a 1000m swim off Takapuna Beach, an achievable distance for individuals with swimming experience.
‘Give It A Go’ – a 300m swim off Takapuna Beach, a great introduction to open water swimming.
‘State OceanKids’ – a swim for children aged between 6-10 years old, consisting of a fun 30min safety activity session followed by a 200m shallow water swim along the Takapuna Beach shore line, lined with Surf Life Saving NZ guards.
